& OTHER STORIES

I got to pull my dream team together this past week to work on a floral installation for the window to the much anticipated LA store opening of & Other Stories. We had a heat wave this week with it getting as hot as 90 degrees so there were challenges that I had to find creative solutions for to keep this living installation hydrated and green! I have to say, we nailed it. The windows look absolutely beautiful. It really does pull you to the store.

Thank you so kindly Alana, Christopher + Kirsten for bringing the floral magic. You are my dream team. And thank you & Other Stories for this opportunity! XO

MOVE !

What informs your work? Movement and line has been heavily observed on my end.

FLOWERS THRU MOVEMENT

I was honored to get to hold a workshop at my dear friend Hank's shop in Silver Lake,  The Plant Provocateur a few weekends back. We transformed his beautiful plant shop into a flower studio that looked like it could have been in an alleyway in Kyoto! The inspiration for the class was movement and how movement can inform our arrangements. I wanted to see energized flower creations with motion and energy - a deliberate break from the standard triangular arrangements that look like they are from a dutch still life (which I too find extremely beautiful of course).  I wanted students to explore something deeper for their inspirations - I wanted them to fish deep within themselves to see what they could pull out and run with that as their guides as opposed to a notion of what their arrangements should look like. Lo and behold I was astonished: such extremely unique and dynamic floral arrangements were indeed manifested! It was such a success and the students joy with their creations was just as infectious.

I am always pleasantly delighted at the beginning of a class when students are timid and unsure of what they are capable of creating, and being able to lead them to a confident floral designer by the end of a class with just a few simple instructions and more than anything else, encouragement for them to keep on pushing and going with their vision(s). That is the gift for me. That is my return.

To my awesome students: thank you for showing up and keeping me inspired.

Irving Penn for Vogue

One more from Irving.
Happy weekend to you dear reader!

Irving Penn for Vogue

Studying and admiring flowers past their prime. As they start to wilt and fade a different kind of beauty sets in, one of age and time passed. They take a different shape and present another layer to their beauty, don't they?

QUEEN of the NIGHT / CEREUS FLOWER

found image by ? / Night Blooming Cereus
Are you familiar with the ceroid cacti that bloom at night? We have several in my neighborhood and I find them absolutely spellbinding. Some only bloom once a year, for one long anticipated night, while others are short lived. Can you imagine? What a gift!

FLOWERS of the NIGHT

Some recent shots from a night botanical studies series that I am researching for a shoot.  I was so pleasantly surprised by the light that the almost-full moon cast down upon her blooming night flora. More to come!

The Moon Lists / Leigh Patterson

I was really excited (and honored) to have been asked by (brilliant, wonderful, superb) Leigh Patterson to participate for the August portion of her newest personal project, The Moon Lists. I have decided to make Moon Lists for Elijah and myself every month now. A time-worthy project to sit down and reflect upon the time/moments passed from one full moon to the next.

Much more here (lucky me to be featured along Julia Sherman's list too!)

THANK YOU LEIGH X

ALL YOU NEED IS . . .

This year has felt so intense. Do you feel like that too? There is so much trouble, anger, hatred and low vibrations throughout what seems the entire world. A lot of fear, negativity and misunderstandings while not a whole lot of love, compassion and understanding to balance the scales. I can feel the weight. Can you? On a personal level we have lost more than a fair share of friends these past two months. Big losses. Sad losses that seem to coin the term 'Life can so so unfair, so unjust.' And outward on to a larger scale with the losses happening in the greater world. Times like these cause for pause and reflection. They also call for coming together and connecting. We need more love. The world needs more light.

I am curious if you too feel this? Do you have solutions?

NEKO DECO for MADAME FIGARO, JAPON / OUTTAKES

All photos by Yoshihiro Makino
I am delighted to get to share these photos with you! A while back photographer Yoshihiro Makino had asked me if I wouldn't mind sharing two of my great loves with Madame Figaro Japon: cats + flowers (!) for a story they were running called Neko Deco. I (of course) was thrilled with the opportunity which lead to a  really nice afternoon of talking shop flower-wise and herding my coy cats. These are some of the outtakes. I know that all four of my little fury darlings feel quite honored and somehow a head above the other outdoor cats after having had such an elaborate feature! Thank you so kindly Yoshi

Thank you Madame Figaro Japon for the love xx

Garden of Peace and Meditation

recent 35mm shots / Lake Shrine
'You are a wildflower, a beauty unsurpassed.'
-Paramahansa Yogananda

I recently got some 35mm film rolls developed and came upon a few stellar shots (upon many missed shots!) from our family morning trip out to Lake Shrine in the Pacific Palisades to celebrate Elijah's birthday. Have you heard of Paramahansa Yogananda and his centers for self-realization? Have you been to one before dear reader?

I highly, highly recommend a walk around Lake Shrine.
Let the peacefulness and flowers wash over you.
Always.
